Should graphic designers be considered artists? I would argue, yes. Although a computer screen serves as their medium, and their work is contrived utilizing a pallet of Adobe programs, creativity and originality is still key to great design. That is also true of art. As our technology advances, so do the tools that artists use to create their work. Many photographers are now using editing programs like photoshop to enhance or alter their images. Even installations involving nothing more than technology are considered to be works of art- I'm looking at you Rain Room. Yet, graphic designers are not as prominent in the fine arts. I know they will be soon. Digital art is present today and it will be ever more present in time.
This was the mindset I had while looking through the works of Cairo based graphic designer, Faried Omarah. I came across his work on tumblr and was immediately drawn to it- his typography, creativity, and the messages he expresses in his pieces. They make you think, as all art should. He has great things to say and expresses them in an interestingly artistic way. You can see more of Omarah's work on his tumblr and on facebook.
